Vårdcentralen
(VC)
Your
first non-emergency-weekday-office-hours-call about medical care should
probably go to your local health care clinic, or vårdcentralen.
You are automatically assigned to the vårdcentralen
nearest you, but are always free to choose to go elsewhere.
To
find the address and phone number of the nearest VC, check the website for
Primärvården
Göteborg (http://cf.vgregion.se/primgbg/)
and click on your area on the map, or click on vårdcentraler.

You must call them first and tell them what is
wrong. They
will either tell you to come immediately or at a certain time when the proper
doctor will be there.

Sjukvårdsupplysning
(kinda like "Dial-a-nurse")
This is an information service you can call to find out which
heath care clinic (vårdcentral) you belong to (i.e., closest to your home). They can often
give other medical information if you aren't sure what to do. Remember, you are
free to choose any clinic in Göteborg. The number is 703 15 00.

Prenatal care (Mödravårdscentral,
MVC)
When you are expecting a baby, you should contact the nearest
prenatal care center (Mödravårdscentral) (listed in the blue pages of
the telephone book under "Barnmorskemottagning" or call sjukvårdsupplysning),
or check the website for Primärvården
Göteborg (http://cf.vgregion.se/primgbg/)
and click on barnmorskemottagning. You will be assigned to a
midwife who will meet with you
on a regular basis throughout your pregnancy. If you are not happy with the
midwife assigned to you, do not hesitate to ask to switch. These centers can
also assist with birth control counseling, pregnancy tests and annual
gynecologist visits.

|
Well-baby clinic (Barnavårdscentral,
BVC)
Contact your local well-baby clinic (Barnavårdscentral)
(listed in the blue pages of the telephone book under "Barnavårdscentral"
or call sjukvårdsupplysning), or check the website for Primärvården
Göteborg (http://cf.vgregion.se/primgbg/)
and click on barnvårdcentraler. On certain days you can go without an
appointment to have children weighed and measured and/or talk to a nurse. She
will make doctor appointments for check-ups and vaccinations. She also has
telephone hours everyday when you can call for advice. They prefer that you
don't bring sick (contagious) children to the clinic or "centralen".
Phone the nurse and she will refer you to the proper clinic. Everything at the
well-baby clinic ("barnavårdscentralen") (medical visit, vaccinations)
is free.

Private groups in
Göteborg
It has become more and more common with private medical
practices in Sweden. Usually, visits to these doctors do not necessarily cost
more than a visit to one of the state-run centers or hospitals. For more
detailed information and telephone numbers, consult the "blue" health
care (Hälso- och sjukvård) pages at the back of the pink pages
telephone book.

Naprapat
The naprapat license requires four years of education and one
year of practice, and is highly regulated. The first school of naprathy was
founded in 1907 by Oakley Smith, a chiropractor and medical student, in Chicago.
Education is concentrated to orthopedic, musculature, and manual medicine. After
a medical history, patients are given an average of 3-5 treatments. The emphasis
is on relieving pain, discovering cause, giving ergonomic advice and developing
a personal exercise program. Who goes to a naprapat? People with backaches, back
problems, headaches, sports injuries, work related injuries, etc.
