Finding your way in Göteborg

Like in most major cities abroad, finding your way in Göteborg is not as easy as in a major U.S. city with its geometric blocks and numbering system. Göteborg is over 350 years old, built originally by Dutchmen as a fortress with canals and short narrow streets. Modern Göteborg has sprawled far beyond the original bastions (which can still be seen - and even toured - in some parts of the city). Nowadays, whole sections of the city have related street names, such as birds, spices or music, and knowing the name of the street you are looking for is often a clue to where in the city it is located. Street numbering usually starts at one end of the street with "1", with all odd numbers on one side and all even numbers on the other side. But don't think for a second that 32 is necessarily across the street from 31, it might be across the street from number 9 instead...

The AWC highly recommends the use of the map and street register found at the back of the yellow pages (gulasidorna) in the telephone book. When announcing our meetings or other gatherings, we usually give the map coordinates from this source. For example: ypm 26 A1 = yellow pages map, page 26, cell A1. You can also visit the website for Gula Sidorna or Eniro and use the map function (click on kartor) and detailed driving instructions (vägbeskrivning) where you enter the address of your starting and ending points and can print out extremely detailed directions with maps. Unfortunately, these site are currently available only in Swedish. Or, you could just get one of those cool cars with GPS that talks and tells you exactly where to turn and when you're lost and such....

To find your way via bus or tram, consult the website för Västtrafik - www.vasttrafik.se where you can enter details of your journey (date, time, starting point and destination by address or by the name of the nearest stop) and print out your bus or tram schedule to take with you. Västtrafik's website is available in both Swedish and English.
